Graduation project ideas for computer science students in Iraq
Last updated: 13 October 2026
Here are graduation project ideas that suit computer science, IT, software engineering and computer engineering departments at Iraqi universities. Each idea comes with what you actually build and how hard it is. Pick one as it is, or take it as the start of your own idea.
Before you choose
- Choose a project you can explain line by line. The committee asks “why?” more than it asks “what?”.
- Read your department's requirements first: some departments want a research side, and some are happy with a working system.
- For AI projects, make sure the data exists before you choose. No data, no project.
- A real problem around you — a shop, a clinic, a neighbourhood generator, or your own department — convinces the committee more than a general idea.
- Estimate the time: one semester is enough for a medium system, and not enough for three ideas in one project.
1Management systems — the easiest to defend
They suit every department, and they have a real user you can try them with before the defense.
| The idea | What you build | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Neighbourhood generator subscriptions | Register subscribers and their amps, work out the monthly bill, and send a WhatsApp reminder to anyone late to pay. | Easy |
| Clinic appointment booking | The doctor's schedule, booking from the phone, a reminder before the appointment, and a record for every patient. | Easy |
| The college library | Lending and returns, late fines, and searching books by title and author. | Easy |
| A pharmacy with expiry alerts | The medicine stock, selling by barcode, and an alert a month before any medicine expires. | Medium |
| A debt ledger and stock for a shop | Customers' debts and payments, the stock, and a statement sent on WhatsApp. Its full example: The Shop Ledger. | Medium |
| Student attendance by QR code | A code that changes every minute on the classroom screen, scanned by the student's phone, and an absence report for the professor. | Medium |
| Complaints for a public service office | File a complaint with a photo and a location, follow its status by number, and a dashboard for the staff member in charge. | Medium |
2Mobile apps
They can be built with Flutter for Android and iPhone from one codebase, and you show them at the defense from your own phone.
| The idea | What you build | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Blood donation | Register donors by blood type and province, and notify them when they're needed. | Easy |
| University lost and found | Post a lost or found item with a photo, and a chat between the two people. | Easy |
| Transport lines in your city | A map of the minibus lines and their stops, and the nearest line to where you are. | Medium |
| Delivery for a local restaurant | The menu, ordering with cash on delivery, and tracking the order's status. | Medium |
| An app that works offline | It saves what is entered on the phone, sends it when the connection comes back, and resolves the conflict if the same row changed in two places. | Hard |
3AI and machine learning
The strongest impression on the committee, and the longest time: collecting and cleaning the data takes half the project.
| The idea | What you build | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Palm tree diseases from leaf photos | Classifying the photos with a CNN, and an app that photographs the leaf and gives the diagnosis. | Medium |
| Sentiment of comments in Iraqi dialect | Collecting comments and classifying them as positive, negative and neutral, and comparing two models. | Medium |
| Property prices in Baghdad | Collecting and cleaning sale listings, and a regression model that estimates the price from the area and the neighbourhood. | Medium |
| An assistant that answers from the department guide | Semantic search in the department's files, and a language model that answers from them and cites the source. | Hard |
| Detecting fake news in Arabic | Labelled Arabic news data, a text model, and a page where you paste the news and see the result. | Hard |
| Iraqi licence plate numbers | Detecting the plate in the photo, then reading its numbers with optical character recognition (OCR). | Hard |
4Computer vision and image processing
| The idea | What you build | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Attendance by face recognition | Register the students' faces once, then recognise them from the classroom camera. | Medium |
| Counting cars at a junction | Detecting cars in video and counting them for each direction, with a report on the rush hours. | Medium |
| Pneumonia from X-ray images | A model on open X-ray data, with a map showing where the model looked. | Hard |
| Reading handwritten Arabic | Turning a photo of a handwritten page into searchable text. | Hard |
5Cybersecurity
| The idea | What you build | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Two-step sign-in | A temporary code that changes every 30 seconds (TOTP), added to an existing sign-in system. | Easy |
| Hiding a message inside an image | Hiding encrypted text in an image's pixels and extracting it, and measuring the difference between the two images. | Easy |
| A phishing link detector | Extracting the link's features and classifying it, and a browser extension that warns before it opens. | Medium |
| An encrypted password manager | Storing passwords with AES encryption, unlocked by one master password. | Medium |
| Intrusion detection with machine learning | A model trained on known network data such as CIC-IDS, and a dashboard that shows the alerts. | Hard |
6Networks and the Internet of Things
Especially for computer and communications engineering students: a device working on the table convinces more than any slide.
| The idea | What you build | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Designing and simulating a college network | A network with departments, VLANs and a firewall in Packet Tracer or GNS3. | Easy |
| Smart irrigation for gardens and farms | A soil moisture sensor that runs the pump by itself, with monitoring from the phone. | Easy |
| Home electricity use | A current sensor with an ESP32, and an app showing consumption on the national grid and on the generator. | Medium |
| Air quality and dust | Dust and gas sensors, and a phone alert during dust storms. | Medium |
| A smart home with voice commands | Turning lights and appliances on from the app and by voice. | Medium |
7Arabic and the Iraqi dialect
A field with little competition: most ready-made models understand Standard Arabic better than dialect — and that is where your project fits.
| The idea | What you build | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Arabic spell checking | Detecting common mistakes, such as hamzas and the tā' marbūṭa, and suggesting the correction. | Medium |
| Summarising Arabic articles | A model that summarises a news story in three sentences, and a comparison of two summarisation methods. | Medium |
| Iraqi speech to text | Fine-tuning a speech recognition model on dialect recordings, and measuring the error rate before and after. | Hard |
| Understanding commands in dialect | A sentence like «سجل على أبو أحمد عشرين ألف» (“put twenty thousand on Abu Ahmed”) becomes a command the system carries out. We built one like it in The Shop Ledger. | Hard |
8How to choose between two ideas
- The idea you understand every part of beats the bigger idea.
- The easy one, fully done, beats the hard one, half done.
- Ask: who will use it? If you find a real user, you have the answer to the first question at the defense.
- Start early with AI: data and training take weeks, not days.
9If you want us to build it with you
We build the whole graduation project with you: the software, the report and the slides, with walkthrough sessions until you understand every line and can defend it before the committee. We start from your department's requirements, and agree on the price before we start — it doesn't change after. The details are on the page For students.
